The former West Germany was one of the later West European countries to eliminate steam and in the late 1960s and early 1970s, Geoff Monks and Ray Hammond both visited the Federal Republic to record almost all the remaining steam classes on cine film.

Beginning in the centre of the country, we see examples of the small class of 65s at work around Aschaffenburg before moving to the Mosel Valley route where Pacifics, 2-6-2s and 2-10-0s are seen in action. Ex-Prussian 38s and 78s plus other types are seen in the Black Forest area while 03s at Ulm and 01s at Hof round off our tour of the southern part of the country.

Moving northwards, intense steam activity is seen on the Osnabruck-Hamburg line just before electrification and the programme concludes with a look at the former 01.10 Pacifics and 2-10-0s running between Rheine and Emden with an ex-Prussian 94 seen at Emden.

Zimbabwe, formerly Rhodesia, has been called the land of the Garratts for this type of motive power dominated the main line steam scene for many years and some examples were still at work in the late 1990s.

Beginning at Bulawayo in 1975, Garratts and a 12th. class are seen on station pilot duties. Moving out onto the main line to Gwelo, types 14A, 15 and 16A are seen as well as a South African GMA on hire.

The West Nicholson branch is next visited with 14As working goods and mixed trains through rolling bush and through more rugged scenery. The section concludes with pacing shots of a 15A + 16A combination.

The final section covers the Victoria Falls line, firstly around Wankie with 15ths and 20ths passing through fine scenery and then to Victoria Falls. Not forgotten is the Wankie Colliery system with its green 4-8-2s.

The archive film is sourced from 8mm colour cine film and mastered on professional equipment. An authentic soundtrack has been added along with an informative commentary.

For the latter part of the journey a 'Kriegslok' double heads a GlO type 0-10-0. The pro granime concludes with a look at the splendid Henschel 2-8-2s working over the Konya-Afyon line.

This volume recalls the days when steam traction could be found in every country in Europe. Our travels take us to the mountains of Austria, the meadows of Ireland and the pine forests of Finland. A great many different classes of locomotives are seen, mostly in normal service with the original footage being mainly taken in the 1960s.

Beginning on the famous Vordernberg to Eisenerz rack railway in Austria, we progress to the nearby Donaeitz steelworks and then to West Germany where DB and industrial locomotives can be seen hard at work.

Two Irish railtours of 1961 and 1964 come next. Blue 4-4-0s and other types are seen both on the tour trains and in normal service on the CIE and UTA.

Finally we visit Denmark, Sweden and Finland in the very early 1960s. The footage of locomotives in normal service is especially rare, particularly so in Sweden.

This volume recalls the days when steam traction could be found in every country in Europe. Our travels take us from the plains of Poland to the heat of the Mediterranean. A great many different classes of locomotives are seen, mostly in normal service between the early 1960s and early 1980s.

We begin in Poland where we see freight and passenger classes in profusion while an equally steamy East Germany reveals numerous Pacifics and other types still in service during a late 1970s visit.

In France the final days of steam on the Paris Nord and Bastille suburban workings are witnessed before we head into Switzerland for a brief look at a steam excursion on the Waldenburgerbahn near Basle,

We next visit Italy where conventional and Crosti-boilered locos are seen at hard at work and, finally, we visit Greece to join a steam tour.
