Towards the end of working steam on British Railways a number of locations became ‘favourites’ as enthusiasts gathered to record the end of an era. In this programme we return to these vantage points and recreate the railway scene in all its variety. Steam and passenger workings, shunting, the railway surroundings and stations details are all featured in this homage to a long lost era.

Clapham Junction, Carnforth, Vauxhall, Waterloo, Nine Elms Shed, Severn Tunnel Junction, Chepstow, Croes Newydd, Sunderland and York are all visited using previously unpublished film.

Classes vary from former Great Western designs through to the A4s and A2s.

The Great Central was a well laid main line providing a fast route to the Midlands. It was the last main line to be built opening n 1898 and closing in 1966 and in this series we explore the route in the 1960s in the days of working steam.

Here, in the first volume, we travel from London Marylebone to Helmdon, just south of Woodford Halse and feature:

Watkins great plan for the ‘London Extension’ and its building together the links with the Great Western Railway.

Marylebone Station its building and operations in the days of working steam together with the return of steam in the 1980s.

Through the London Suburbs.

The approach to Marylebone, the terminus itself and the line through Harrow on the Hill to Rickmansworth in the days of steam including steam on Metropolitan services.

The Great Central was a well laid main line providing a fast route to the Midlands. We explore the route in the 1960s and the days of working steam, travelling from Woodford Halse to Nottingham visiting the stations and lineside features on the way.

The volume comprises:

Woodford Halse: the approach lines including Culworth and Woodford Junctions, Woodford Station and freight and passenger traffic.

The Link to Banbury: freight and passenger traffic on the line through Eyndon Road to Banbury with B1s, 8fs and 2-6-4 tanks.

Woodford Shed & Yards
: with steam power in and around the shed in the early 1960s, plus freight on the northern approach to the station.

Rugby to Leicester: Scenes at Central & Midland stations and the line and stations northwards.

Then and Now: An exploration of the remains of the Great Central Railway from Woodford Halse to Nottingham in 2010 and a comparision of past and present scenes throughout the route.

The 1960s saw a steady decline, with through services ending in Septem ber 1966. Then the last passenger trains ended three years later. In this volume we chart this decline into the 1980s and then explore the revival of services at three railway centres.

In this volume we feature:

Services into Marylebone: the station and line to Woodford Halse in the final year of through services.

Steam in the 1960s: Freight traffic with 9Fs, and passenger services featuring a wide range of traction in 1965 and 1966.

The route from Euston to the North was regarded as the ‘Premier Line’, and carried considerable quantities of passengers and freight. In this programme we explore the development of the route, and chart the motive power changes.


PART ONE - THE PRE WAR YEARS Steam in the 1920s with a variety of LNWR power. The 1930s with LMS Pacifics including footage of the "Coronation Scot" 114mph run in 1937.

The crossing of the Cumbrian Hills was to lead to one of the most spectacular sections of main line in the country. Volume 3 of this series looks in detail at the steeply graded line running north from Carnforth over Shap to Carlisle.

Part One – Away from the Industry of the North West. Steam traction on the line from Lancaster to Carnforth during the period 1964 to 1968.

Part Two – the Climb into the Northern Hills. A detailed look at the formidable ascent to the 916 foot summit as Shap using archive film taken during the period 1964 to 1967 at Oxenholme, Grayrigg, Low Gill, Dillicar Troughs and Tebay.

Part Three – The final climb to the Summit. Steam operation on the 1 in 75 climb from Tebay to the summit featuring Pacifics, Jubilees, Britannias, 9fs and Patriots hard at work.

Part Four – the Descent to Carlisle. The line through Penrith and the Eden Valley to the major railway centre at Carlisle.

Part Five – Carlisle. This strategic point was at the centre of the railway network to Scotland. Citadel Station, Kingmoor Shed and Yards plus steam on the main line are all featured in the 1960s.

Part Six – Electrification. A look at the electrification of the 270 miles of main line from Weaver Junction to Carlisle during the period 1970 to 1974.
