Merehead to Theale on two dvds

This dvd was made with the invaluable assistance of Foster Yeoman Limited, who are well known to railway enthusiasts for their commitment in the use of rail and especially their purchase of five General Motors built Class 59 diesel locomotives.

We start by examining the process by which Foster Yeoman’s principle product, stone from the vast quarry at Merehead in Somerset is blasted from the ground, transferred to grading sheds and loaded onto the trains.

The railway complex at Merehead is seen, including the special servicing shed for the class 59’s and repair facilities for wagons, before we join a Westbury driver for the cab ride onboard 59005 from the terminal to Theale.

The full cab ride over the ex-Great Western West of England main line, from Witham Friary via Westbury to Theale, forms the bulk of the dvd.

Please note there is no commentary other than cab conversations which are not always audible above locomotive sounds.

This Cab Ride was recorded from the cab of HST Power Car No. 43122 during its journey from Aberdeen to Edinburgh via the wonderful coastal route to Dundee.

The train, which was the IV57 at 09.10 hrs, will eventually progress to Plymouth. We cross over the famous bridges of the Tay and Forth and see some fascinating railway detail during the journey which is fully described by Driver Leader John Thompson of Edinburgh Waverley.

The first part of this Cab Ride was recorded from the cab of a Thameslink EMU, No. 319428, from Bedford to Moorgate. The next section from Farringdon to Brighton was aboard No. 319167.

Our service departs from Bedford at 07.24 and is the only fast service to London, stopping at Flitwick only. Running at 90mph, we pass through Luton, and through St Albans at 100mph on the ‘up’ fast line.

Our train passes through Kings Cross tunnel and into Kings Cross Thameslink. We then progress to Farringdon and The Barbican and onto Moorgate. From here we return to Farringdon after which the pantograph is lowered and the third rail is now our power source at 750 volts DC. Our service passes through Snow Hill tunnel then into City Thameslink before the steep climb into Blackfriars and over the River Thames via Blackfriars Junction and Metropolitan Junction – one of the busiest junctions after Clapham.

Our route then takes us to London Bridge and onto the fast main line to East Croydon, Gatwick Airport and Three Bridges. We then stop at all stations from here to Brighton.

This Cab Ride was recorded from the cab of a Virgin Trains Voyager unit.

We depart from Birmingham New Street at 07.32 on 14th May 2003.

We approach the South Tunnels just out of the station and climb up to Proof House Junction and on to Grand Junction. At St Andrews Junction we join the line from Saltley and at Bordesley Junction, we join the line from Snow Hill. Our route takes us through Solihull, Leamington Spa and Fenny Compton – site of one of only three mechanical signalboxes at the time.

Our next stop is at Banbury and then onto Oxford, Reading, Wokingham and Guildford where we take the Portsmouth direct line through Haslemere, Havant and approach Portsmouth via Fratton and coming to a halt at the end of a fascinating journey at Platform 3 at Portsmouth & Southsea.

During our journey we pass by a number of classes of locomotives including Class 66s, 57s, 47s, HSTs, Voyager’s and EMUs.

The programme was made in conjunction with Virgin Trains and met all the required safety conditions during filming.

This Cab Ride was recorded from the cab of a Virgin Trains Voyager 220 unit which was travelling from Derby to Swansea.

We join the journey at Birmingham New Street where we departed at 08.42 on Monday 12th May 2003.

We head out of Birmingham towards the south west and take the route which uses the downward incline at Lickey before progressing to Cheltenham, our first station stop.

From here we progress to Gloucester and skirt the western side of the Severn estuary through Lydney, Chepstow and on to Newport. Now in South Wales, we call at Cardiff, Bridgend and Neath before arrival at Swansea at 11.25.

Look out for the many junctions and industrial lines associated with the steel industry at Llanwern and Port Talbot.

This cab ride was filmed from the cab of EWS Class 37 264 for a driver training exercise.

We begin from Bristol’s Barton Hill Depot and travel along the Great Western Main Line to Swindon during which we a number of different classes en route including, 47s, 59s, and HSTs.

The return to Bristol is via Wootton Bassett Junction and Chipping Sodbury and through the 2-mile long tunnel. We end our trip at Bristol East Carriage Sidings.

There are occasional picture disturbances (radio interferenc) as our Traction Inspector uses his mobile to call various signal boxes.

Filmed in the cab of Virgin Trains’ HST No. 43160 in 2000 we depart from Crewe station and pass the famous Works buildings.

Chester is the first stop and we continue through Shotton, Flint and Prestatyn before arriving at Rhyl.

Our next stops are at Colwyn Bay and Llandudno Junction with good views of Conwy Castle as the train progresses to Bangor.

Britannia Bridge is a truly remarkable spectacle as we pass onto Anglesey. It was the 150th anniversary of the Britannia Bridge

and LMS Black Five No. 45407 was in the area. It followed our HST into Holyhead and our camera was able to join the steamhauled train part of the way. We were fortunate in obtaining aerial footage courtesy of RAF Valley’s Sea King helicopter as it crossed the Britannia Bridge.

Altogether, a good way to celebrate 150 years of this famous bridge.

This Cab Ride was filmed from the cab of EWS Class 73 No. 73133 named The Bluebell Railway.

This locomotive was being used for driver training and on this occasion the reporting number of 0Z68 was affixed. Our journey begins at Dollands Moor where a number of Eurostar sets are seen. This route will be via Ashford International and Headcorn, where we are looped. Following an incorrect pathing here, the driver has to telephone the signaller to get the correct path set.

This locomotive-only learning service takes the route via Redhill and at Penshurst we stop at a red signal due to a signal failure. Our progress from here is under caution instructions as far as Edenbridge. From here we progress to Stoats Nest and Clapham Junction before arrival at Stewarts Lane.

This volume was filmed on board a Virgin Voyager ECS working from the EWS yard at Eastleigh Depot on 15th May 2003. Destination was Poole sidings in readiness to begin a cross country service.

Our route takes us through the depot at Eastleigh passing the yard signal box and joining the Botley line with Eastleigh Works on the left to enter Eastleigh Station for a reverse move.

The Voyager then takes the main line through St Denys and Southampton, through the New Forest passing the junction for the Marchwood branch and then through Christchurch, Pokesdown and Bournemouth.

The final section is from Bournemouth through to Poole station where a stop is made to allow various passengers trains to pass in the Up direction after which the ECS move continues into the sidings just to the west of Poole station.

A cab ride journey aboard an HST power car in winter with very snowy conditions from Glasgow Central to Lancaster travelling via Beattock and Shap inclines. The amount of snow snow interrupted the journey and the train was re-routed via the Wishaw spur line.

Ipswich to Harwich and Cambridge

We are in the cab of Anglia Railways 153326 for the 09.54 service from Ipswich to Harwich and then Cambridge on 22nd October 2001.

Directly on departing from Ipswich we head into the 361-yard long tunnel and emerge to Manningtree North Junction where we take the route left off the main line. From here the train progresses to Mistley, Wrabness and Parkeston Goods Junction for arrival at Harwich Platform 3.

The driver changes ends and we depart for Cambridge via Ipswich, Stowmarket and leave the main line at Haughley Junction for Bury St. Edmunds through Chippenham Junction and onto Newmarket.

We finally approach Cambridge via Coldham Lane Junction and arrive at Platform 6 at the university city’s station.

All aboard the cab of Anglia Railways 150255 for the 09.19 service from Ipswich to Lowestoft on 20th August 2001.

Soon after departing Ipswich we cross the main line at East Suffolk junction and join the branch here for Lowestoft. First stop is Westerfield where a problem occurs with collecting the Electric Token so the driver progresses a little further long the platform to obtain a signal and the token obtained.

Progressing along this particularly delightful branch line, we pass over no less than 51 level crossings and cross over the famous swing bridge at Oulton Broad. There is a combination of half barriers, with some full barriers and just ‘open’ crossings with lights and sirens. We run onto the single line section to Melton and then Wickham Market and Saxmundham where a token exchange occurs again.

Darsham and Halesworth and then Beccles and Oulton Broad South are reached before crossing the swing bridge to join the line from Norwich from the left and enter Lowestoft.
