There can be few people who have never thought of escaping to their own private island. Now, with this unique video programme, it is possible not only to visit the island of your choice but also find plenty of rail action.

The three contrasting islands featured in this programme all still rely heavily on rail transport, offering the rare opportunity to combine a relaxing sunshine holiday visit with some very distinctive rail action. This superbly made programme, which also highlights the great variety of scenic delights on these three very different islands, includes:-

  • Sicily:- Rail ferry services from the Italian main land to Messina, including docks traffic. Standard gauge electrified freight and passenger services from Messina to Cattnia and Palemo. Also diesel, freight and passenger services from Palemo to Traptni. Main line services between Caltanissetta and Cattnia. There's also plenty of narrow gauge action featuring the famous Ferrovia Circumetnea which circles the still active volcano of Mount Etna.
  • Sardinia:- Both standard and narrow gauge lines are featured in detail on this fascinating Italian island. There are both loco hauled passenger as well as diesel unit operations and plenty of freight action to be seen on the main FS line that operates from Golfo Arancli down the length of the island to Ctgliari. Highlights include double, triple and even quadruple headed freights! Several famous Ferrovi della Sardegna narrow gauge lines, with their distinctive units, are also featured, including the line from Macomer to Nuoro which still sees a daily freight service. Also part of the still operational huge network of narrow gauge lines in the south east of the island, are explored. Also a cab ride on the FdS Nulvi to Stssari line.
  • Corsica:- The French narrow gauge Corsican railway network may not be as profuse as the other islands featured in this programme but it certainly makes up for this with plenty of scenic variety. Featured routes include Bastia to Ponte-Leccia, and Calvi to Ile-Rousse - with it's fabulous coastal scenery including beach running. There is also freight action on the mountainous main line. The network is renowned for it's many splendid viaducts including the most famous structure which was designed by Gustave Eiffel.

New Horizons Vol.16: Spain

New Horizons Vol.16: Spain

Simply the most up-to-date guide to Spanish railway operations!

Spain has so much to offer in railway terms - from stunning scenery to distinctive Moorish stations, and yet is comparatively seldom featured by UK rail magazines. Away from the popular Mediterranean holiday beaches, is a very different country, of distinct cultural areas.

Ever since the first line was opened from Barcelona to Mataro in 1848 to the creation of RENFE in 1943, the system has exuded a very individual nature.

As well as freight and passenger services on the electrified broad gauge lines, we'll also be examining Talgo and diesel rural services.

There's also a chance to compare the standard gauge high speed AVE service operations with the more leisurely independent northern narrow gauge lines which serve many of the more important Atlantic coast towns.

There's action from all parts of Spain including main line & commuter services from Madrid, Barcelona, and Valencia as well as principle cross border services. Other highlights include a look around Alstom - Spain's principal builder of new motive power and preserved main line steam as we follow Garratt 282F 0421 high into the Pyrenees.

  • Oberwiesenthal:- This scenic 750 millimetre gauge railway branch runs for 17 kilometres from Cranzahl, at 654 metres above sea level, to Oberwiesenthal, on the Czech border, at 892 metres - so it's a hard pull with plenty of superb Winter action.
  • Freital:- Running from Freital Hainsberg, on the outskirts of Dresden, the 750mm gauge branch to Kurort Kipsdorf first parallels the Dresden-Chemnitz main line before heading up the beautiful Rabenau valley.
  • Gorlitz:- A brief visit is made to the loco works at Gorlitz, the most easterly town in Germany right on the Polish border, where steam locos are still serviced.
  • Harz:- This is probably the best known German narrow gauge system situated a couple of hours south east of Hanover - just inside the old East German border. It’s an impressive line, and the biggest narrow gauge system in Germany with up to seven engines in steam daily. Many scenic sections of this lengthy railway - it’s nearly 90 kilometres from end to end, are featured including spectacular Winter snow scenes.
  • Zittau:- Just a couple of hours east of Dresden in the south eastern corner of Germany is yet another 750mm gauge steam worked branch. The line divides at Bertsdorf, where on weekdays there are no fewer than 18 departures for either Oybin or Jonsdorf, including some spectacular simultaneous departures!
  • Radebeul:- Just north west of Dresden - it actually starts in the city's suburbs - is the 750mm gauge 16.5 km line from Radebeul Ost to Radeburg. The busy city of Radebeul, with its attractive trams, has a large workforce many of whom are still lucky enough to commute by steam.
  • Bad Doberan:- In the far north of Germany, on the coast near Rostock, we visit the famous Bad Doberan-Kuhlungsborn line - the renowned 'Mollie’, which runs literally right along the high street of Bad Doberan. Operated by a fleet of 2-8-2Ts, the line is built to the unusual gauge of 900mm - unique today on the DB system.
  • Gohren:- Also in the far North of Germany is the steam branch, from Gohren to Putbus featuring the more common 750mm gauge. There’s plenty of steam action along the route from, Germany's second oldest seaside resort, on the island of Rugen.
  • Wolsztyn:- The last regular standard gauge steam running in Europe is featured in Poland. There’s a visit to the now famous round house, as well as spectacular main line steam passenger and freight action on the line to Poznan - as well as visit to the narrow gauge line at Sroda.
