Railway Roundabout 1958

Railway Roundabout 1958

Ref: GU101D

Price:£13.25

Quantity:

Classic scenes from the celebrated BBC television series using films from the collection at the National Railway Museum.

In the late 1950s and early 1960s, the BBC broadcast a series of television programmes called Railway Roundabout, featuring train lines which proved to be on the point of closure and locomotives that were about to disappear forever.

This archive film footage has been transformed by Ian Allan and is now available as eight separate Railway Roundabout DVDs, all superbly recreating the lost age of steam!

Highlights of this fascinating DVD include views of the 'Bristolian' in the days of steam and trains in action on the Lickey incline.

We then go on a journey to Ireland to see the Irish narrow gauge in all its glory, then back to Southampton harbour for more steam scenes.

The Hayling Island branch is also included as is the Cardigan branch.

Finally we hop on board the very last train from Abergavenny to Merthyr.

Filmed in Black & White and colour.

Finally, it is explained why the films survived when the BBC was routinely throwing away, wiping or recording over their programmes in the 1950s and 1960s - the BBC had [rather stingily] paid a fixed fee to Pat Whitehouse and John Adams to produce the programmes (rather in the manner of current commissioning practices) and the authors kept possession of the films.
