The Days of the LMS. – The 1930s with a range of steam power at work on expresses and local trains. Includes Black 5s which had just entered service plus 4-4-0 Compounds from the days before Grouping. Many well known locations are featured including Millers Dale, Monsal Dale Viaduct and Matlock.


The Route through the Peaks – An exploration of the route before its ending as a through route in 1968 with both steam and diesel traction. We start at Ambergate, and follow the line through Matlock, Bakewell, Darley Dale, Rowsley and Monsal Dale to Millers Dale and its large station. Steam is featured on freight traffic with 9Fs, WDs, Fowller 4Fs and Stanier 8Fs with steam banking power.


Peaks diesels are seen at many locations on express services from Manchester to St Pancras.


We then look at the route through the triangular junction with the Buxton line with freight and passenger traffic followed by the line through Great Rocks Junction and Peak Forest to the summit at Dove Hills Tunnel.


Finally comes the descent from Dove Holes Tunnel to Chinley and the junction with the Hope Valley line.


The Final Days – the last steam services, the final Peak hauled expresses and the ‘Blue Pullman’ leading to the lines end as a through route in 1968

From Closure to Hiking Trail – following the line from Ambergate all the way to Chinley with aerial views of the trackbed, plus the remaining freight route through Peak Forest to Buxton.plus the Heritage line from Matlock to Rowsley.

Hertfordshire was once served by a fascinating and varied collection of railways. The main lines to London ran alongside a network of sleepy and little used branches. Most of the branch lines have long gone, but the main lines survive. This, the first of 3 Volumes, explores the areas network of lines from the steam era to the present day.


In Volume One Presenter Tony Furse takes us on a journey around Hertfordshire using an extensive collection of archive material.


  • St Albans looking at the station, signal box and steam shed using archive material from steam days, through the diesel era to the electric age.

  • The Midland Main Line with a variety of steam workings at Napsbury in 1959.

  • The Branch Lines of St Albans and the railway from St Albans to Watford Junction. We explore the stations along the route in the 1960s through to the last years of diesel services.

  • Watford Junction and the steam era with film from the early 1960s on the main line and at the steam shed.

  • Electrified Branch Lines exploring the branches to Croxley Green and Rickmansworth Church Street. Steam and Diesel special trains are featured along with electric services in the 1970s.

  • Gone but not Forgotten and the long closed branch from St Albans to Hatfield. We explore the line using archive from the 1930s to the late 1960s, including the last freight trains. We also look at recent developments at Smallford and Nast Hyde Halt.

The East Coast Main Line looking at the route from Kings Cross to Potters Bar and Hitchin in the steam era along with film from the 1970s. Welwyn Garden City, Hatfield, Stevenage and Digswell Viaduct all feature with A4s, A1s, V2s and suburban trains.


Cross Country from Hitchin and the lines to Royston and Bedford in the 1950s and 1960s. Includes a detailed look at steam comings and goings at Bedford and the quiet intermediate stations at Cardington, Southill and Henlow Camp with passenger and freight traffic. Also featured is a DMU on the branch in the days up until closure in 1961 and a Highland Goods loco in 1964.


The Branch to Hertford with a detailed look at the line from Welwyn Garden City to Hertford and the intermediate stations at Attimore Hall Halt, Holywell Hyde Halt, Cole Green and Hertingfordbury and the end of the line at Hertford Cowbridge. The line is shown during the run of a steam special behind a Great Northern J13 tank. In addition we explore the remains of the line in recent months.

The Buntingford Branch A journey along the line from the junction at St Margarets and through the intermediate stations at Mardock, Hadham, Standon, Braughing and Westmill. Includes a journey along the line in a DMU, the history of the railway and the remains of the branch in recent years.


The Nickey Line. The branch from Harpenden to Hemel Hempstead starting with a history of the line. The rundown of passenger services is followed by a look at freight services until complete closure in 1979. Includes the Railway Correspondence and Travel Societies special of 1958, the South Bedfordshire Locomotive Clubs Special of 1960 and the LCGB specials of the 1970s. The Hemelite trains with views from the cab and lineside and featuring Drewry shunter D2203 and Clayton diesel D8568. The line is then explored prior to tracklifting. Finally we take a look at the remains of the line in recent months.

Two contrasting railways once ran over the Chilterns via Luton. One was the long lost branch from Welwyn Garden City to Dunstable and Leighton Buzzard. The other was, and still is, the Midland Main Line from St Pancras to the North. This programme looks at both of these lines railways in the late 1950s and 1960s along with the developments in the post steam era.


Along the Lea Valley. The railway from Welwyn Garden City through Wheathampstead and Harpenden East to Luton using previously unpublished film. This features the last passenger and freight services, demolition trains and the line just after closure.


The Midland Main Line. The line through St Albans and Harpenden to Luton featuring steam and passenger workings in the late 1950s and 1960s. Includes Scots, 9fs, Stanier 8fs, Jubilees and 2-6-4 tanks. Metrovic Co-Bos, the Blue Pullman and the inauguration of DMUs on the suburban services in 1959 along with Peaks, Brush Type 2s, a ‘Western’ Diesel Hydraulic and BRCW type 2s.


Luton to Leighton Buzzard. The railway from Luton Bute Street through Dunstable to Leighton Buzzard. The last ‘Dunstable Flyers’ are shown with steam traction in 1962 along with DMUs in 1965. Freight as well as passenger trains are also shown along with the final workings to Dunstable right up until the 1990s.

Mid Wales offered a contrasting mix of railways, from the major links from Shrewsbury to the coast at Aberystwyth and the Central Wales Line, to the long secondary lines from Moat Lane to Hereford, Brecon and Neath. In this programme we explore these lines mostly in the 1950s, 1960s and 1980s.


Through Mid Wales. Shrewsbury and the line through Welshpool, Moat Lane, Newtown over Talerddig to Machynlleth with many of the intermediate stations and a range of steam power including ‘Manors’ and Standard Class 4s on passenger and freight. To the Coast at Aberystwyth. Machynlleth and the Cambrian line to Dovey Junction and Aberystwyth with a wide range of traffic including the Cambrian Coast Express. Aberystwyth’s steam shed and the narrow gauge line is also featured in the 1950s, 1960s & 1980s with a wide range of traction.

The Cambrian Coast and the route from Barmouth to Ruabon:- Barmouth through Ruabon provided a combination of dramatic coastal scenery, steep gradients and a wide variety of motive power. This volume explores these lines using archive film from the 1950s, 1960s and 1980s.
