Steam 1968

Steam 1968

Ref: TV0049D

Price:£13.99

Quantity:

1968 saw the end of a century-and-a-half of our main-line steam railways.

It started with just over 350 steam locomotives in service. Nearly all of the steam working was on freight traffic and some spectacular sights were still to be seen. As the year progressed, withdrawals continued and the remaining sheds were closed – or closed to steam at least.

Steam’s approaching demise was marked by a number of special trains, mostly organised by various enthusiast societies but one or two by BR as well. Right at the end, the 4th of August saw six railtours running in the Manchester and Preston divisional areas – and a week later, the very last train, the ‘Fifteen Guinea Special’ from Liverpool to Carlisle and back.

In this volume we celebrate some of the sights and events of that momentous year.

It comprises:

Steam in Action in 1968 including the Peak District and in and around Stockport, Bolton and the West Coast Main Line, Rose Grove the climb to Copy Pit.

The Last Steam Sheds - Stockport, Patricroft, 10D Lostock Hall, Heaton Mersey, 10F Rose Grove & 10A Carnforth.

The Final Railtours. LCGB Lancastrian, the North West Tour, the Last Day of Steam Railtour and the Fifteen Guinea Special of the 11th August 1968.

After the End. 4472 ‘Flying Scotsman’ on tour around the country. Carnforth Shed in the first months of preservation.

Steam on the Grade (60-mins)

Steam on the Grade (60-mins)

Ref: TV957D

Price:£9.95

One of the finest sights of all is that of a steam locomotive working a heavy train up a steep grandient. This programme brings the challenge to life by using archive film from the 1960's, showing some of the Country's best known gradients.

Starting with the Cromford & High Peak railwy and the remarkable railway crossing of the high moors of Derbyshire, we witness J94s working on both freight and special trains, including scenes of the 1 in 14 Hopton incline.

We then move onto the famout Lickey incline to see Ex LMS, GWR & BR Standard locos attacking the grade during the 1960s. A brief loot at Gresford Bank on the former GWR from Wrexham to Chester follows with Ex GWR and BR Stantards working on heavy freights on the grades to Brymbo.

This film wouldn't be complete without Shap. A wide variety of classes are featured on the legendary 1 in 75, including 'Duchesses' and 9fs on both freight and passenger.

We conclude with film of the 'Long Drag' and 'Ais Gill' on the spectacular Settle and Carlisle during the last days of steam.

PLUS A BONUS PROGRAMME

Main Line Steam on the Grade in the preservation era - scenes throughout the network and on the Devon Banks.
